If you’ve parked in the merchant lot behind Ludlow lately, you’ve likely caught the sound of music drifting across the pavement from the front of the record shop.
It comes from 356 Ludlow, but it’s not the shop you remember. For those of us who have frequented this block for years, it’s easy to assume the record store is the same one that’s been there for a decade. It isn't.
Since early 2024, Feel It Records has taken the reins, transforming a neighborhood staple into the headquarters for an internationally recognized record label.
During a recent visit, I learned something that perfectly captures the soul of this place: the music you hear drifting outside isn't from some global streaming service or a digital playlist. It’s actually a single record being hand-selected and played by the owner, Sam, on the store’s old-school record player.
It doesn't get more local than that—it’s like getting to overhear your neighbor's homemade playlist while you're outside on a beautiful spring day.
From Pizza Delivery to International Acclaim
The story of Feel It Records doesn't start in a shop; it starts in a dormitory in Richmond, Virginia, back in 2010. Founder Sam Richardson started the label as a "hobby," funding his first vinyl releases by working as a pizza delivery driver.
For ten years, Sam ran the label on the side while touring in punk bands. Everything changed in 2020.
While the rest of the world was shutting down, one of Sam’s releases (Sweeping Promises) became a massive international hit. Suddenly, the "hobby" was a full-time global operation.
The Two-Year Secret
In 2022, Sam moved himself and his massive archive of 12,000 records to Cincinnati. For two years, Feel It operated as a "hidden" business on the West Side, shipping records to fans in London, Tokyo, and New York from a home office.
When the beloved Torn Light Records announced they were moving to Chicago in early 2024, Sam saw the chance to finally give the label a public face. He took over the space, built a custom stage for live music, and opened Feel It Record Shop to the public.
Why It’s More Than a Store
- The Stage: Unlike most record stores, where you just browse, Feel It was designed with a dedicated stage. They host frequent in-store performances, bringing touring bands from the label's roster directly to Ludlow Avenue.
- Curated Community: Sam’s goal wasn't just to sell records, but to create a "no-barriers" environment. Whether you are looking for a rare 1970s punk 7-inch or just want to start your very first vinyl collection, the vibe is welcoming rather than elitist.
- They Also Buy & Trade: Feel It Records is always looking to grow its inventory—they buy and trade for used records, CDs, and cassettes. If you have a collection looking for a new home, bring it by and talk to Sam.
