What's that smell? Dozens of residents reported a strong odor Wednesday morning in and around Covington and into Cincinnati.

Many also took to social media to share their reports, telling WLWT fire crews and Duke Energy event took reports of a bad smell.

Some said it smelled like fuel or natural gas, while others described it as rubber, garlic or even potato salad.

Reports came in from across Northern Kentucky, including Elsmere, Erlanger and Fort Mitchell, with some people saying they smelled it as far away as Clifton.

So what was it? Kenton County dispatchers confirmed to WLWT that firefighters were sent to investigate reports of the odor in Covington and along I-75.

Dispatchers later said they believe the smell may have come from a train carrying asphalt in the area.

Residents say the smell started to dissipate around 9 a.m., seeming to indicate there's no longer a major concern.
